2006 J. G. Taylor Spink Award Winner Rick Hummel
Rick Hummel, who has covered baseball and the Cardinals for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 24 years as a beat writer and five as a columnist, was named the recipient of the 2006 J.G. Taylor Spink Award.
Hired by the Post-Dispatch in 1971, Hummel becomes the second writer from the paper to be so honored, joining Bob Broeg.

This Day in Baseball History
On June 19, 1977, the Cleveland Indians fire Frank Robinson, major league baseball’s first black manager. The Indians, in fourth place with a record of 26-31, hire coach Jeff Torborg as Robinson’s replacement. Robinson will receive his next managing job four years later with the San Francisco Giants, becoming the first black manger in the National League.
