25th Annual Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture Begins Wednesday

Acclaimed Author Frank Deford to Deliver Keynote Speech on May 29; More Than 60 Papers to Be Presented

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – The home of baseball is hosting the game’s top scholars and authors this week as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum presents the 25th Annual Symposium on Baseball and American Culture May 29-31 in Cooperstown. 

The event, co-sponsored by the State University of New York College at Oneonta and the Hall of Fame, will feature more than 60 presentations selected from academic paper submissions from across the country. More than 160 presenters from 30 states ranging from Washington, California, Texas and Florida will be represented. 

The 2013 Symposium will begin on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with a keynote address from Frank Deford, award-winning author and baseball commentator. Deford’s presentation is entitled “Baseball, Casey and Me.” 

All sessions require registration for the Symposium, which is sold out. The Symposium will feature 24 breakout sessions with themed presentations as well as a featured panel discussion on labor rights pioneer Curt Flood. 

Topics for panels exploring the unique relationship between the National Pastime and American culture include Civil Rights, unions, video games, politics, music, history, poetry, baseball in wartime, women in baseball and many more.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Museum observes summer hours of 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. from Memorial Day Weekend until the day before Labor Day. From Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend, the Museum observes daily regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $19.50 for adults (13 and over), $12 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $7 for juniors (ages 7-12).
