Baseball Hall of Fame to Celebrate 75th Anniversary with Major Event Weekends in 2014

Diamond Salute to Feature Summer Celebrations of 1939 Museum Opening

November 12, 2013

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Seventy-five years of preserving history, honoring excellence and connecting generations will be celebrated in a year-long anniversary party in Cooperstown in 2014, in recognition of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s formal opening on June 12, 1939.

As the Museum recognizes its diamond anniversary in 2014, four distinct celebrations will commemorate the anniversary, with spectacular event weekends planned in Cooperstown, all revolving around the theme of 75 years of preserving the game’s history, though each event offers a unique perspective and offering for fans of the game around the globe.

Open year-round, the Museum will host weekend celebrations in May, June and July in recognition of the 75th anniversary. The Museum will also offer two opportunities for fans to support Museum’s 75th anniversary beyond Cooperstown.  The major weekend events for 2014 are as follows:

Hall of Fame Classic/BASE Race – May 23-25

The Museum will honor baseball legends of past and present with the Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Classic, presented by Ford Motor Company, on Saturday, May 24. The Legends Game at Doubleday Field will feature Hall of Fame legends and stars of earlier eras, complete with a Main Street Parade, the Second Annual “Night at the Museum,” a Youth Skills Clinic, as well as the new date for the Museum’s “Be A Superior Example” (BASE) Race, promoting healthy living. A golf fundraiser with Hall of Fame legends also highlights Classic Weekend 2014. For the second consecutive year, the Classic will be held over Memorial Day Weekend to honor baseball’s long-standing connection with the Armed Services.

75th Anniversary Birthday and Member Celebration – June 12-14

The Museum will celebrate its natural 75th birthday on Thursday, June 12, reflecting on the historic events of that day in 1939 as the Hall of Fame was formally commemorated. Special guests and programs will fill the day on Thursday, June 12 and on Friday and Saturday, the Museum will pay special recognition to participants of its Membership program who have helped support the organization throughout the years.

Hall of Fame Weekend – July 25-28

The Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be inducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27 at the Clark Sports Center, featuring electees from the Expansion Era Committee vote in December and the Baseball Writers’ Association of America election in January. Winners of the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence and J.G. Taylor Spink Award for writers will be honored at the July 26 Awards Presentation at Doubleday Field. The 75th anniversary theme will highlight Hall of Fame Weekend programming.

Two commemorative keepsakes will provide fans the ability to support the Museum’s 75th anniversary beyond Cooperstown starting in 2014. The Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin, authorized by Congress and the President through public law Public Law 112-152, will be produced by the U.S. Mint in 2014, a surcharge included in the price of each coin will benefit the Museum’s educational outreach. Also in 2014, the Hall of Fame will produce, in conjunction with Little Brown publishing, “The Hall: A Celebration of Baseball’s Greats,” the official book of the 75th anniversary of the Museum, featuring 10 original essays from Hall of Fame legends, as well as additional content on all 300 Hall of Fame members. Both of these items will be available for purchase from the Hall of Fame beginning in 2014, with proceeds benefiting the outreach of the Museum’s educational activities.
