A Class Act: Baseball Writers’ Association of America Election Results Revealed Jan. 9
Announcement to be Carried Live on MLB Network and Simulcast on Baseballhall.org; Class of 2012 Enshrined July 22
COOPERSTOWN, NY – The countdown is on for the start of the 2012 baseball season, and the year’s most anticipated moment comes Monday, January 9, with the announcement of the results of the annual Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame election.
The results of the 69th BBWAA Hall of Fame election will be revealed at 3 p.m. ET on Jan. 9. MLB Network will carry the announcement live as Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson delivers the results. The announcement will also be simulcast on MLB.com and at baseballhall.org.
The 2012 BBWAA ballot features 27 players, including 13 new candidates and 14 returnees. Any candidate who receives votes on at least 75 percent of all ballots cast will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2012.
The 27 candidates (with the returnees in bold and their 2011 BBWAA election percentage in parenthesis) include: Jeff Bagwell (41.7%), Jeromy Burnitz, Vinny Castilla, Juan Gonzalez (5.2%), Brian Jordan, Barry Larkin (62.1%), Javy Lopez, Edgar Martinez (32.9%), Don Mattingly (13.6%), Fred McGriff (17.9%), Mark McGwire (19.8%), Jack Morris (53.5%), Bill Mueller, Terry Mulholland, Dale Murphy (12.6%), Phil Nevin, Rafael Palmeiro (11.0%), Brad Radke, Tim Raines (37.5%), Tim Salmon, Ruben Sierra, Lee Smith (45.3%), Alan Trammell (24.3%), Larry Walker (20.3%), Bernie Williams, Tony Womack and Eric Young.
Any candidate emerging from the BBWAA election with votes on at least 75 percent of all ballots cast will join Golden Era Committee electee Ron Santo as a member of the Class of 2012, which will be enshrined July 22 in Cooperstown as part of the July 20-23 Induction Weekend. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
