(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – With the 2013 big league season under way, team captains Goose Gossage and Phil Niekro are focused on building their squads for Cooperstown’s summer opener: The Hall of Fame Classic.
Gossage and Niekro – along with fellow Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers – will headline the fifth annual Hall of Fame Classic, slated for Saturday, May 25 at Cooperstown’s historic Doubleday Field. The Classic, presented by Ford Motor Company, will also feature legendary managers Bobby Cox and Cito Gaston in a rematch of their dramatic 1992 World Series matchup, against the backdrop of our nation’s military with a salute to the Armed Forces.
The Hall of Fame Classic moves to Memorial Day Weekend this year as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates the time-honored connection between the National Pastime and the nation’s military.
“We’re going to build a team that can stop Knucksie’s winning streak in Cooperstown,” said Gossage, referring to Team Niekro’s two-game roll at the Hall of Fame Classic. “And we’re all going to have fun doing it. It’s an honor to come back to Cooperstown any time, and it’s a special privilege to return to the Classic and to honor our nation’s military heroes.”
Following the Classic, the Hall of Fame will host “A Night at the Museum” – a new event that provides a limited number of fans an unforgettable evening with Hall of Famers and other big league stars from 7-9 p.m. Fans can take pictures with their heroes while sharing a meet-and-greet experience throughout the Cooperstown shrine.
The Hall of Fame Classic, presented by Ford Motor Company, will feature Hall of Famers and more than 20 recently retired major league players in a seven-inning legends game. Four soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division will also participate in the contest, which will be preceded at 1 p.m. by the Legends Hitting Contest at Doubleday Field.
Fans can experience May 24-26 Classic Weekend through two packages available for the first time in 2013:
- Baseball’s Past and Present will feature a baseline ticket on either the first- or third-base side to the Hall of Fame Classic and a one-day Museum admission pass for just $25, a savings of $7 off the regular rate.
- Let’s Play Two features a baseline ticket on either the first- or third-base side to the Classic and entry to “Night at the Museum,” a two-hour exclusive opportunity to meet and greet Hall of Famers and other former big leaguers from 7-9 p.m. at the Hall of Fame. Let’s Play Two is available for $50 per person.
As part of the military celebration, the Hall of Fame Classic will feature a special appearance by members of the 10th Mountain Division from nearby Fort Drum. The 10th Mountain Division Band and Color Guard will take part in the pregame festivities for the Hall of Fame Classic. The Band will play in the pregame Cooperstown Game Day Parade, which begins at noon on Main Street, and also perform several patriotic selections and the National Anthem prior to the 2 p.m. Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field.
Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division (LI) will present the colors at Doubleday Field during the National Anthem.
Classic Weekend will feature the return of several family favorites as well as new programs sure to thrill baseball fans of all ages, including: a Hall of Fame golf tournament fundraiser for the Museum; the Youth Skills Clinic hosted by several former major league players; a member photo opportunity with Hall of Fame members; curator-led talks on the history of Doubleday Field; a family photo opportunity at Doubleday Field; the Cooperstown Game Day Parade; the popular Family Catch at Doubleday Field; and other unique programs throughout the Museum.
