Museum Hosts Futuristic Baseball Planners during ‘Imagine Mars Project’ April 27

Fourth-through-Eighth Graders to Design Baseball Experience on the Red Planet in Conjunction with NASA Educators at Workshop in Cooperstown

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Baseball is already a world-wide game. But thanks to the Imagine Mars Project, the National Pastime is going out of this world with students at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. 

The Museum will host the Imagine Mars Project, a workshop for fourth-through-eighth grade students, April 27 in Cooperstown. Imagine Mars is a national arts, sciences and technology education initiative sponsored by NASA and the National Endowment for the Arts that leads students to work together with scientists, engineers, artists and civic leaders to design and share a futuristic Mars community. 

At the Hall of Fame workshop, students will work to create a baseball experience on Mars – factoring in the extreme Martian environment and the physical aspects of Mars while imagining what life may be like on the red planet. Working with NASA educators, scientists and Museum staff, students will be asked to create uniforms, stadiums, marketing, concessions and new rules for the game. Within each category, students will work together to devise a way that baseball can be played on Mars. 

Cost of the workshop is $10 per student, which includes materials, supplies and lunch and beverages provided by Price Chopper. Space is limited to 50 participants and registrations will be accepted on a first-come basis. Students must be enrolled in grades four-through-eight to participate, and a parent or guardian must be present to register and pick up the student on April 27. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the Imagine Mars Project Showcase from 3-5 p.m., where students will demonstrate their creations.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Museum observes summer hours of 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. from Memorial Day Weekend until the day before Labor Day. From Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend, the Museum observes daily regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $19.50 for adults (13 and over), $12 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $7 for juniors (ages 7-12).
