Rain Forces Cancellation of 2011 Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open Golf Tournament in Cooperstown
29th Annual Tourney Washed Out; 2012 Event to Be Held Sept. 4-7 at Leatherstocking
COOPERSTOWN, NY – Continuing rains have forced the cancellation of the 29th Annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open in Cooperstown, a three-day, 54-hole tournament featuring 106 senior professionals scheduled to take place this week at Leatherstocking Golf Course.
Following heavy rains on Wednesday, the tournament was shortened to a 36-hole, two-day event, scheduled to begin Thursday morning. With continuing rains, the tournament was called Thursday morning. It marks the first time in the Tournament's 29-year history that the event has been cancelled.
The traditional post-Labor Day Event, hosted by the Otesaga Hotel, the title sponsor, and its companion Leatherstocking Golf Course, is one of the senior premier events in the Northeast, with more than 100 pros annually competing for a $75,000 purse for the top finishers. The presenting sponsor for the tournament is NBT Bank.
In 2010, Ed Whitman of Blairstown, N.J., won the Seniors Open with a three-day total of 202. Tuesday's Pro-Am portion of the Seniors Open event helped to raise more than $50,000 for Pathfinder Village, a residential community located in nearby Edmeston, dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome. Annually, the Seniors Open raises funds for scholarships for Pathfinder Village and directly helps the Village's 90-plus residents. More than $1.5 million has been raised for Pathfinder Village through the years. A portion of the Pro-Am proceeds also benefits the educational outreach of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
The 30th Annual Seniors Open Tournament and Pro-Am will be held Sept. 4-7, with the Pro-Am on Tuesday following Labor Day, and the three-day Seniors tournament to be held Sept. 5-7.
