Sanchez shoots tournament-record 64 to take second-round lead at Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open
Hanefeld one shot back heading into Friday's final round
COOPERSTOWN, NY – Javier Sanchez of Fayetteville, Ga., shot a tournament-record tying 64 to take the lead after day two of the Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open on Thursday in Cooperstown.
Sanchez, who was three strokes off the lead after shooting an opening-round 68 on Wednesday, blistered the Leatherstocking Golf Course with his seven-under par mark on Thursday during a humid-but-sunny day in Central New York, finishing with a two-day total 132.
Kirk Hanefeld of Acton, Mass., shot a 65 on Thursday to leave him one shot behind Sanchez at 133, and John Ross of Freeman, W.Va.,shot a 66 for a two-day total of 134 and third place.
Mike Lawrence of Anderson, S.C., is alone in fourth place with a 135, while Wayne Wright of Fort Worth, Texas and Tom Eubank of Ellijay, Ga., are tied for fifth, four shots behind Sanchez.Wright also shot a 64 on Thursday.
First-round leader Mark Balen of Orchard Park, N.Y., shot a second-round 73 and is six shots off the pace.
The 30th annual tournament concludes Friday, with 90 senior golfers from throughout the country competing for a total purse of $67,750. The traditional post-Labor Day event is hosted by the Otesaga Hotel and its Leatherstocking Golf Course, with NBT Bank the presenting sponsor. Play concludes at Leatherstocking late Friday, followed by an awards ceremony and check presentation to this year's champion.
Proceeds from this event benefit Pathfinder Village, located in nearby Edmeston, N.Y., a residential community dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome. Annually, the Seniors Open raises more than $50,000 for scholarships for Pathfinder Village.
Proceeds also benefit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum educational programs, which enable the world-famous Museum to fulfill its educational mission and care for its collections.
