1997 Hall of Fame Game

Eric Anthony tied a Hall of Fame Game record with three home runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 16-8 in the 51st Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 4, 1997.

The Dodgers combined for 21 hits in the first intraleague Hall of Fame Game matchup since the Kansas City Royals played the Texas Rangers in 1986.

Down 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Anthony’s first home run accounted for Los Angeles’ first three runs.

The Dodgers then used a six-run fifth inning to secure their lead. Designated hitter Billy Ashley hit two home runs en route to a 4-for-6 performance.

The two teams combined for nine home runs, trailing only the record 10 homers hit in 1996 by the Montreal Expos and the California Angels. The game also marked the highest scoring Hall of Fame Game in history, breaking the previous record of 22 runs set by the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox in 1953. The Dodgers' 16 runs tied the record set by the Reds in the 1953 matchup.

San Diego right fielder Mark Sweeney hit two of the Padres’ four home runs, and Charles Poe and Brandon Pernell joined Sweeney with two hits on the day. Sweeney led the Padres with four RBI.

Ramón Martínez started the game for the Dodgers, making his third rehabilitation appearance since injuring his rotator cuff. In his three innings pitched, Martinez allowed four runs on five hits while striking out three.

San Diego utility player Archi Cianfrocco – a native of nearby Rome, N.Y. – played five different positions in the game, starting at second base, then playing first base, right field, shortstop and catcher.
