Virtual Field Trip: Mudcat Grant

Thursday, October 1, 2020 - 2:00pm

In this special Virtual Field Trip, we take an in-depth look at one of the game’s most colorful characters. “Mudcat Grant: Baseball’s Magical Man” examines the career of former major league standout Jim “Mudcat” Grant, the first American League black pitcher to win 20 games in a season.

After winning 145 games during his big league career, Grant set out on a new course as a humanitarian and unofficial ambassador for the game. He has fought against illiteracy and drug abuse, while also trying to increase African-American participation in the game.

A frequent visitor to Cooperstown and a friend of the Hall’s Education Department, Mudcat has stood out as a baseball renaissance man, writing a book, performing in a musical group, and striving to help fellow ballplayers who have fallen on hard times.
