2018 Highlights

2018 WAS A BANNER YEAR

When all was said and done, the 2018 Induction Ceremony crowd – with its wild cheering and appreciative applause for the six electees – was one of the largest in the history of National Baseball Hall of Fame.

With their bronze plaques awaiting and immortality assured, switch-hitting third baseman Chipper Jones, slugging star Jim Thome, multi-talented outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, closer extraordinaire Trevor Hoffman, the ultimate competitor Jack Morris and legendary Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell gave their induction speeches in Cooperstown on the afternoon of Sunday, July 29, 2018.

In the ceremony held under ideal conditions – party sunny, a slight wind and temperatures right around 70 degrees – at the Clark Sports Center, located about a mile south from the Hall of Fame, an estimated 53,000 fans came to witness this annual rite. Only the 2007 Induction Ceremony, which hosted 82,000, drew more fans.

A record 57 Hall of Famers – including the Class of 2018 – attended the Induction Ceremony. In front all those in Cooperstown and a national television audience on MLB Network, the six newest members of this exclusive fraternity would speak of their families, thank teammates, coaches and managers, and embrace the emotion of the moment, trying their hardest to put into words what being a Hall of Famer means to them.

It was the climax of a weekend that started with the PLAY Ball with Ozzie Smith event Friday morning and wrapped up with the Legends of the Game Roundtable on Monday. Many events in between, including the Parade of Legends and annual Awards Presentation on Saturday, made it another memorable weekend.
