1998 Hall of Fame Game
With Cal Ripken 2,583 games into his streak, Baltimore manager Ray Miller figured it was time to give his star shortstop a day off.
In the end, the Orioles didn’t need Ripken, as they defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1 in the 52nd Hall of Fame Game on July 27, 1998, at Doubleday Field.
Orioles outfielder Rich Becker was named the game's Most Valuable Player Award after going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Future Hall of Famer Roy Halladay made the start after the Blue Jays called him up from the minor leagues.
Halladay pitched six innings of three-run baseball, striking out four while walking three batters.
Toronto scored its fonly run in the bottom of the third inning when Joe Bernhardt doubled with one out in the inning and scored on Billy Brown’s ground out.
Leading 4-1 heading into the eighth inning, the Orioles increased their lead with three runs in the frame.
Willis Otanez doubled and scored on P.J. Forbes’ double. Becker then hit his home run to cap Baltimore’s scoring.
After pitching three hitless relief innings, Radhames Dyckoff earned the win for Baltimore, walking three and striking out four.
Toronto catcher Kevin Brown led the team with two hits, while Billy Brown had the Blue Jays’ only RBI.
Becker and Otanez each had two hits for Baltimore.
