About Joe McCarthy

"Never a day went by when you didn't learn something from Joe McCarthy." – Joe DiMaggio.

For a man who never played in the major leagues, Joe McCarthy seemed to know more than anyone about how to win in the big leagues. Under his tutelage, the Bronx Bombers ran off one of the most dominant eras of any team in baseball history, winning eight American League pennants and seven World Series titles in a 12-year period – including four straight Fall Classics from 1936-39.

About Connie Mack

"To me, the name of Connie Mack always has been synonymous with baseball, standing for everything that is best for the game he loved.” – Will Harridge.

Connie Mack was perhaps more synonymous with the team he managed than any skipper in baseball history. For 50 years, the slender Mack stood tall in the Philadelphia Athletics’ dugout in his trademark business suit and was known as The Grand Old Man of Baseball. During those five decades, Mack assembled two separate dynasties and won a total of nine AL pennants and five World Series titles.

About Bill McKechnie

If Bill McKechnie knew one thing from his playing career during the Deadball Era, it was that shutting down the opponents’ hitters were the key ingredients to winning games.

Using pitching and defense as the backbone of his philosophy, McKechnie became a highly successful manager once his playing days were done.

McKechnie was the first skipper to win pennants with three different National League clubs – the Pittsburgh Pirates (1925), St. Louis Cardinals (1928) and Cincinnati Reds (1939-40).

About Frank Selee

Long before managers had scouts, sabermetrics or video at their disposal, Frank Selee was one of the first master talent evaluators in baseball history.

Selee himself never played an inning of major league baseball. He was working at a watch factory in Waltham, Mass., when he learned to play the game with an amateur team from nearby Melrose. In 1884, Selee quit his job and raised $1,000 to form a minor league team. His reputation for having a sharp baseball mind soon spread to the major leagues, and in 1890 Selee was named manager of the National League’s Boston Beaneaters.

About Walter Alston

His big league playing career consisted of exactly one at-bat – one that ended in a strikeout. But a little more than 46 years after his Sept. 27, 1936 debut for the St. Louis Cardinals, Walter Alston was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In between, Alston established himself as one of the best managers in major league history. “He might be taken for a farmer who came to manage the town team on a Saturday,” wrote Furman Bisher of the Atlanta Journal. But beneath Alston’s quiet exterior was the heart of a champion.
