1982 Hall of Fame Game
In the 39th Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 2, 1982, the New York Mets and Chicago White Sox were knotted 4-4 in the eighth inning when the game was called on account of rain. The tie was the third in the history of the series, and the American League maintained its 22-14 advantage over the National League.
Chicago took an early two-run lead in the top of the second inning on three hits and a walk, but the Mets responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Hubie Brooks hit a solo home run to cut the White Sox’s lead in half.
In the bottom of the third, Bob Bailor and George Foster singled and Dave Kingman reached on an error, allowing Bailor to score the tying run.
White Sox first baseman Chris Nyman doubled in shortstop Bill Almon in the top of the fourth, and Marc Hill homered over the left field fence in the top of the fifth to account for Chicago’s final two runs and put the White Sox ahead 4-2.
New York responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh when John Stearns led off with a double and advanced to third and scored on two Mets’ ground outs. Rusty Staub tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run before the umpires called the game.
Mets’ starter Randy Jones pitched three innings of two-run baseball, allowing five hits and walking two Chicago batters. Mike Trujillo, who was called up for the game from Chicago’s Class A New York-Penn League team, threw six innings for the White Sox, scattering six hits and allowing three runs.
