Baseball Writers’ Association of America Election Results Revealed Wednesday, Jan. 18
Announcement to be Carried Live on MLB Network and Simulcast on MLB.com; Class of 2017 Inducted July 30
(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – The most anticipated moment of the baseball year comes Wednesday, Jan. 18, with the announcement of the results of the annual Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame election.
The results of the 73rd BBWAA Hall of Fame election will be revealed at 6 p.m. ET on Jan. 18. MLB Network will air extensive coverage, interviews and analysis beginning at 3 p.m. ET, then televise the announcement live as Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson delivers the results. The announcement will also be simulcast on MLB.com. Follow the action on social media with #HOF2017.
The 2017 BBWAA ballot features 34 players, including 19 new candidates and 15 returnees. Any candidate who receives votes on at least 75 percent of all ballots cast will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2017.
The 34 candidates (with the returnees in bold and their 2016 BBWAA election percentage in parenthesis) include: Jeff Bagwell (71.6%), Casey Blake, Barry Bonds (44.3%), Pat Burrell, Orlando Cabrera, Mike Cameron, Roger Clemens (45.2%), J.D. Drew, Carlos Guillen, Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman (67.3 %), Jeff Kent (16.6%), Derrek Lee, Edgar Martinez (43.4%), Fred McGriff (20.9%), Melvin Mora, Mike Mussina (43.0%), Magglio Ordonez, Jorge Posada, Tim Raines (69.8%), Manny Ramirez, Edgar Renteria, Arthur Rhodes, Ivan Rodriguez, Freddy Sanchez, Curt Schilling (52.3%), Gary Sheffield (11.6%), Lee Smith (34.1%), Sammy Sosa (7.0%), Matt Stairs, Jason Varitek, Billy Wagner (10.5%), Tim Wakefield and Larry Walker (15.5%).
The Class of 2017, which already includes Today’s Game Era electees John Schuerholz and Allan H. “Bud” Selig, will be inducted July 30 in Cooperstown as part of the July 28-31 Induction Weekend. Admission to the 1:30 p.m. Induction Ceremony at Cooperstown’s Clark Sports Center is free and open to the public. Schuerholz assembled World Series-winning teams as the general manager of the Royals and the Braves, while Selig served as MLB’s commissioner for 23 years and presided over an unprecedented era of labor peace for the game.
