For over 150 years the game of baseball has created many opportunities for players from around the world. Today, the "National Pastime" is more culturally diverse than ever before. Thirty percent of players on contemporary big league rosters were born outside of the United States. The game also takes on unique flavors worldwide as players and fans come together at the ballpark, while leaving many of their differences behind.
For starting pitchers we have two Dominicans, one Italian, one Mexican, and one Japanese. In the bullpen we have a Venezuelan, a Mexican, a guy from the United States, and a guy from St. Louis.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the many meanings of the word "community." They will also learn to recognize diversity as a source of strength on a sports team as well as in a community.
Students will recognize that players come from all over the world to play professional baseball in the United States.
Students will learn about special ways that players, coaches, and managers communicate with one another in baseball.
Students will work with museum teachers to reinforce concepts and ideas introduced in the classroom.
