Museum Honors Veterans Day by Offering Free Admission to Veterans during November
(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates Hall of Famers’ service to their country year-round in the iconic Plaque Gallery.
During the month of November, the Hall of Fame will offer all military Veterans free admission to the home of baseball in Cooperstown.
All Veterans will be admitted to the Museum free of charge in November with proof of Veteran status that includes one of the following:
- U.S. Department of Defense Form 214
- NOAA Form 56-16
- Public Health Service Form 1867
- United States Department of Veterans Affairs ID Card
- New York State Driver’s License with Veteran distinguishing mark
The Museum will host special public programs throughout the day on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, including the debut screening of the documentary Trimble: Baseball’s Unknown Hero. The feature-length film by director Pat Kondelis tells the story of amateur star Jimmie Trimble, who enlisted in the Marines after signing a contract with the Washington Senators and was killed in action at Iwo Jima. The film will be screened at 1 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Museum’s Bullpen Theater and is available on a first-come basis to all those with a Museum ticket for that day.
Additional Veterans Day programming at the Hall of Fame features a self-guided tour, available at the Membership Desk, which highlights historic artifacts and players who served their country; special versions of the Plaques of the Gallery Tour; and letters for Operation Gratitude. Following the month of November, the Hall of Fame will continue to provide 20-year career retired military and active-duty military with free Museum admission every day the Hall of Fame is open, with all other Veterans also receiving discounted admission each day.
Seventy of the 354 Hall of Famers interrupted their baseball careers for military service, and each is recognized with a medallion below their plaque in the Museum’s Plaque Gallery that identifies their branch of service and the conflict or conflicts in which they participated. The USS Cooperstown, a United States Navy-commissioned Freedom-class littoral combat ship homeported in Mayport, Fla., honors with its name these 70 Hall of Famers who served the United States during wartime. This heritage is reflected in the ship’s motto, “America’s Away Team.”
