April Adventures Week

Seventy six years ago this year, Jackie Robinson made history for the Brooklyn Dodgers – helping fulfill baseball’s destiny as America’s National Pastime. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first player to break through the color barrier in the National League.

To honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson, the museum will host special daily programming. Museum guests can experience unique Museum artifacts, learn about the history of Black Baseball and participate in programming throughout the two weeks surrounding the 76th Anniversary. Monday, April 3rd

9:00 am-5:00 pm: Jackie Robinson Self-Guided Tour

A self-guided experience in celebration of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier.

10:30 am: Plaques of the Gallery Tour

Aimed at visitors of all ages, this program educates visitors about the history of the Hall of Fame Gallery and the process by which each plaque is made and installed in this 20 minute guided tour.

11:30 am-1:00 pm: Black History Pop-Up in the Learning Center

This interactive Pop-Up is in celebration of Black History Month. Explore images, hands-on items from the Hall of Fame’s education collection, and select artifacts that relate to Black baseball history.

2:00 pm: Mining for Talent

Drop by our cart on the second floor and test your ability to sift through data and identify baseball talent. Hall of Fame staff will present you with several scouting reports of some of baseball’s all-time greats, with one catch: all details identifying each future star will be removed. The challenge: choose future stars to build your team around.

Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, the leader of the world champions, joins us for a special edition of Virtual Voices of the Game. We’ll spend time discussing Dusty’s relationship with Hall of Famer and teammate Hank Aaron. Baker was a two-time All-Star during his playing career which featured seven seasons as a teammate of Hank Aaron with the Braves.

Explore the changes in sports journalism and the media over the last two centuries. Recreate the radio call of Hank Aaron's 715th homerun!

2:00 pm: Viewing of Virtual Voices of the Game: Dusty Baker

Come to the Bullpen Theater for a viewing of our virtual program with Dusty Baker in honor of Hank Aaron Day. Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, the leader of the world champions, joins us for a special edition of Virtual Voices of the Game. We’ll spend time discussing Dusty’s relationship with Hall of Famer and teammate Hank Aaron. Baker was a two-time All-Star during his playing career which featured seven seasons as a teammate of Hank Aaron with the Braves.

A three-time Manager of the Year Award winner, Baker has posted more than 2,000 victories and led his teams to three pennants and the 2022 World Series title. Dusty will offer his thoughts on winning his first World Series, the culmination of a long baseball career that dates back to the 1960s.

2:00 pm: Southern League: A Story of Minor League Integration

Based on the critically acclaimed book by former major league pitcher Larry Colton, this presentation delves into the story of the 1964 Birmingham Barons. Featuring future major leaguers like Blue Moon Odom and Tommie Reynolds, the Barons became the first integrated team in the history of both Birmingham and the state of Alabama. And to cap off their milestone season, the Barons nearly won the Southern League championship.

Join us for a showing of a special edition of Virtual Voices of the Game as we discuss the importance of Jackie Robinson with two former members of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wes Parker, who played first base for the Dodgers from 1964 to 1972, and James Loney, a Dodgers first baseman from 2006 to 2012, will offer their thoughts on Robinson, his career legacy, and his impact on their own careers.
