Winter Break Week Programming

Seventy six years ago this spring, Jackie Robinson made history for the Brooklyn Dodgers – helping fulfill baseball’s destiny as America’s National Pastime. As many schools in the northeast pause for Winter Break, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates Robinson’s heroic journey – along with countless other milestones – in honoring Black History Month. The Cooperstown shrine hosts special daily programs for kids of all ages Feb. 20-24 as part of Presidents’ Week. Families can experience unique Museum artifacts and learn about the history of Black Baseball and participate in programming throughout the week. All events are included with Museum admission.

9:00 am-5:00 pm: Starting Nine

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum challenges you to find your team’s Starting Nine, a lineup of must-sees from our vast collection containing tens of thousands of artifacts that preserve the magical moments and memorable stories of our National Pastime.

2:00 pm: Mining for Talent

Drop by our cart on the second floor and test your ability to sift through data and identify baseball talent. Hall of Fame staff will present you with several scouting reports of some of baseball’s all-time greats, with one catch: all details identifying each future star will be removed. The challenge: choose future stars to build your team around.

2:00 pm: Mudcat Grant: Baseball’s Magical Man

In this special program, we take an in-depth look at one of the game’s most colorful characters. “Mudcat Grant: Baseball’s Magical Man” examines the career of former major league standout Jim "Mudcat" Grant, the first Black pitcher to win 20 games in a season in the American League.

2:00 pm: History of Baseball Cards

From the tobacco cards of the 19th century to the candy and gum cards of the 20th century, we’ll examine the history of a hobby that is almost as popular as the game itself. Come on by and learn about how Topps altered the course of baseball card history, and how cards have changed over the decades. Each child who attends the program will receive a free pack of baseball cards.

This special program in the Hall of Fame Bullpen Theater will highlight the efforts of Negro Leagues founder Rube Foster. Learn about some of the greatest players of black baseball and find out more about the Hall of Famers who started their careers in the Negro Leagues before becoming household names.
