1970 Hall of Fame Game
The Montreal Expos used an offensive explosion to outhit the Chicago White Sox and won the annual Hall of Fame Game 10-6 on July 27, 1970, at Doubleday Field.
Montreal totaled 10 runs on 14 hits, including two hits from six different Expos. The White Sox scored six runs on 12 hits, highlighted by catcher Ed Herrmann’s three hits and second baseman Bobby Knoop’s two runs scored.
The Expos took an early three-run lead in the top half of the second inning with the help of two Chicago errors and four straight singles. Ed Bailey led off the inning, reaching on an error by Luis Aparicio, then advanced to second on a John Bateman single.
Coco Laboy singled to left and, scoring Bailey. Laboy and Bateman wound up on second and third after White Sox left fielder Carlos May mishandled Laboy’s single. Both scored when John Boccabella singled.
Two singles put runners on first and second for Chicago in the bottom of the second, and a double from Walt Williams put the White Sox on the board.
Chicago picked up two more runs in the bottom of the third to tie the score. With the bases loaded, Bob Spence hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring May from third base. With runners on second and third, Tommy McCraw hit an RBI fly out to right field.
Retaking the lead in the top of the fourth, Montreal shortstop Bobby Wine hit a two-run home run into the right field bleachers, scoring Boccabella, who had singled with one out in the inning.
Montreal scored again in the fifth on a walk, a single, and a ground rule double by Laboy.
The White Sox never caught up, though they added a run in the sixth when Knoop led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on Gerry Janeski’s double and scored on a Williams’ ground out.
The Expos increased their lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Catcher Ron Brand led off the inning with a solo shot to right-center field. Then with one away, two consecutive walks put runners on first and second for Montreal. Ron Fairly singled to score Bocabella from second, and Jim Gosger singled to load the bases. Gary Sutherland’s single scored two more runs for the Expos.
Chicago scored two runs in the seventh inning to end the scoring.
