1967 Hall of Fame Game

Heavy rain erased the Cincinnati Reds’ last chance to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, and the Baltimore Orioles won the Hall of Fame Game 3-0 on July 24, 1967, at Doubleday Field.

The Orioles picked up their first run early, as center fielder Paul Blair hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put Baltimore on the board. In the next inning, right fielder Sam Bowen walked and scored on catcher Andy Etchebarren’s two-run blast.

The three runs were all the Orioles would need, as two Baltimore pitchers combined for eight innings of three-hit ball. Marcelino Lopez, who started for Baltimore, gave up just two hits while walking four and striking out two, and reliever Stu Miller pitched four innings of one-hit ball without walking anyone. Miller also struck out four.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s pitchers also threw well, as starter Billy McCool made two mistakes but otherwise allowed just two other hits. He walked six to go along with his six strike outs.

Relievers Jack Baldschun and Bob Lee each pitched two innings of no-hit ball.

Baldschun struck out two and walked one, while Lee struck a batter out without recording a walk.

Blair was the only player on either team to have a multi-hit game, as he also recorded a single to go along with his first-inning home run.

Cincinnati’s three hits were scattered among three different players, and Baltimore had only four hits in the game.
