About Happy Chandler

Though he served just one six-year term as commissioner of Major League Baseball, Albert Benjamin “Happy” Chandler oversaw significant changes in the game.

A U.S. Senator and former governor of Kentucky, Chandler succeeded Kennesaw Mountain Landis as baseball’s second commissioner in 1945. Chandler became a leading candidate for the job after advocating for the continuation of play during World War II.

About Earle Combs

Though Earle Combs may have been overshadowed by more celebrated teammates Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, the center fielder and lead-off hitter on some of the most successful Yankees teams of the 1920s and ‘30s was held in high regard by those in the game.

“He was a table-setter for Ruth and Gehrig,” said fellow Hall of Fame player Joe Cronin. “He was always on base, it seemed, when they’d hit a homer.

About Jim Bunning

Jim Bunning was a tough right-handed sidearm pitcher during his 17-year big league career, but consistency was what he craved, once stating: “I am most proud of the fact I went through nearly 11 years without missing a start. They wrote my name down, and I went to the post.”

From 1955 to 1971, in a playing career spent mostly with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, Bunning would be triumphant in 224 games.
