About Tom Yawkey

On his 30th birthday, Tom Yawkey came into a multimillion dollar inheritance left by his late uncle. Four days later, at the advice of Hall of Famer Eddie Collins, Yawkey bought the struggling Boston Red Sox franchise.

Over the next four-plus decades, Yawkey would become as synonymous with his franchise as perhaps any owner in baseball history. Along the way, Yawkey elevated his club from cellar dwellers to perennial contenders.

About Duke Snider

The Yankees had Mickey Mantle, the Giants had Willie Mays and the Brooklyn Dodgers had “The Duke of Flatbush.”

At the time when there were three New York baseball teams, the team that had your allegiance was as important in the five boroughs as life itself, and in the 1950s nobody represented Brooklyn baseball more than Duke Snider. Those team rivalries of yesterday were immortal. Willie Mays recalled: “Duke was a fine man, a terrific hitter and a great friend, even though he was a Dodger.”

About Chuck Klein

“One of the reasons I’ve been able to play baseball well is because it’s fun for me,” Chuck Klein said. “Many players find it work.”

For 17 years, Klein excelled at the game he found so much fun. He spent 15 years as the Philadelphia Phillies right fielder where he was an offensive force. He was named National League MVP in 1932 and followed that performance by winning the Triple Crown in 1933. He was also an All-Star in 1933 and 1934.

About Al Kaline

Al Kaline was the Detroit Tigers for more than two decades. Through last place finishes and World Series triumphs, the Motor City knew it had its sweet swinging right fielder to cheer for throughout the summer.

Chuck Dressen, a big league skipper for 16 seasons, the last four with the Tigers (1963-66), claimed that Kaline was the “best” player he had ever managed.

“In my heart, I’m convinced Kaline is the best player who ever played for me,” Dressen said. “ or all-around ability – I mean hitting, fielding, running and throwing – I’ll go with Al.”
