About Jeff Kent

Jeff Kent spent the majority of his big league career at second. But on the all-time home run list among second basemen, Kent is alone in first.

Kent, the 2000 National League Most Valuable Player who played 17 big league seasons with six teams, was born March 7, 1968 in Bellflower, Calif. He attended Edison High School in Huntington Beach before enrolling at the University of California-Berkeley, where he eventually starred after earning a roster spot as a walk-on. He was taken in the 20th round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays with the 523rd overall pick.

About Dick Allen

In an era where run production decreased across baseball, Dick Allen fashioned numbers that left him with a permanent place in the game’s record book.

Born March 8, 1942 in Wampum, Pa., Allen signed with the Phillies as an amateur free agent prior to the 1960 season for a reported $70,000. After three full seasons in the minors where he averaged 100 RBI per year, Allen debuted with the Phillies as a late-season call-up on Sept. 3, 1963. By the following season, Allen won the Phillies’ starting job at third base – a position he had rarely played.

About Tony Oliva

For his first eight full big league seasons, few in baseball could conceive of a better hitter than Tony Oliva.

For his last five years, eight knee operations gradually robbed Oliva of his marvelous skills. But no injury could remove Oliva’s impression from those who saw the left-handed line drive master at his peak.

“There are a lot of other guys I’d rather see up there in a clutch situation," Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog said. "You can’t make a bad pitch on him.”
