About Craig Biggio

Craig Biggio starred at Kings Park High School on Long Island in football, and seemed destined to become one of the top recruited running backs in the nation. But his grades did not measure up to his achievements on the gridiron.

“Truly, what I wanted to do was football,” Biggio told the Houston Chronicle. “When it was taken away from me, being able to go to a big-time school, I just said: ‘Get your act together.’”

About Rogers Hornsby

Off the field, Rogers Hornsby was tough, uncompromising and outspoken. On it, he was perhaps the greatest right-handed batter in baseball history.

Hornsby, whose modern era season-record .424 batting average and .358 lifetime mark for 23 big league campaigns established him as the standard for right-handed batters, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1942.

He led the National League in batting seven times, including a fantastic six-year stretch from 1920 through 1925 during which he averaged .402.

About Billy Herman

“Baseball was always kind of a struggle for me,” Billy Herman said. “I guess maybe I was doing all right and didn’t realize it.”

Any evidence of Herman’s struggles as a player is difficult to find. From the time he spent his first full season in the big league as a 22-year-old in 1932, Herman was one of the best players in baseball.

A 10-time All-Star, Herman finished his career with a .304 batting average and 2,345 hits despite serving in the Navy for two years during World War II.
